The Winter Classic is not the only outdoor game that will be happening this season. There will be a total of three outdoor series, The Winter Classic, The Stadium Series, and The Heritage Classic.
Winter Classic: The Winter Classic was cancelled last season due to the ever so famous lockout. But that's a different story. The good thing, the 2013 Winter Classic matchup between the Detroit Red Wings and the Toronto Maple Leafs was rescheduled for this season in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Stadium Series: The new face of outdoor games is something that NHL is trying this season. The Stadium Series at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California; featuring the Anaheim Ducks and the Los Angeles Kings. Personally, I don't know how an outdoor game in California is going to work out. Heat and ice do not mix. This should be an interesting game. The next game in the Stadium Series includes the New York Rangers and the New Jersey Devils. The Rangers will also play the New York Islanders. These games make more sense since they will be played at Yankee Stadium in New York. The New York games will be played towards the end of January. Needless to say it will be a cold one.
Heritage Classic: The final outdoor games will be played in Vancouver on March 2, 2014. The Heritage Classic will feature the Vancouver Canucks and the Ottawa Senators. Each team will be paying tribute to their historical teams. The Senators will be paying allegiance to the early cup winning Senators while the Canucks will pay tribute to the Vancouver Millionaires.
Nonetheless, outdoor games are always an entertaining experience. Not only for the fans, but also for the players. It reminds them of the pond hockey games they played as kids.
